This is mostly how I operate my art studio for them because they really don't have that attention span to work for that long. They need that independent time. Also, art related story books also help me when we've finished early because it still relates and they are still learning art concepts. Some books I've used so far: It looked like spilt milk, mouse paint, the art lesson, Leaf Man, The day the crayons quit, perfect square, the Line, Mud and so on. Good job! great article Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639181043390580427.post-26453269167570225652016-09-23T21:01:58.218-05:002016-09-23T21:01:58.218-05:00I have struggled with this issue most of my art te...I have struggled with this issue most of my art teacher life. We as art teachers are held by standards and objectives. Why can we not record students on what they've done. I've had to defend what I do many times and I'm told my kids can't draw. However, if I spend 5 minutes of class talking about line and your kid can't show me he understood he doesn't deserve a 100. My school does percentages. I've been struggling with this question for the past couple of days as its seems to be a question amoung most of the teachers whose kids go to the school. My first project was doing a smoke alarms contest. How does one give a grade on a drawing required by the school for a contest? This year kinder is not required to get a grade but 1 to 5 are. I could do the easiest thing and give everyone 100 but that goes against everything I stand for. I'd like to give out rubrics but I know with everything on my plate I would not be able to keep up. But as I am writing this I am seeing some clarity. With each project choose the objectives I want them to learn and grade based on those objective. I also think I'm going to use the objectives as the project name so parents can refer to the objectives that were taught. What percentage would you give for E S U?Trini Momhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10917361750326704048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639181043390580427.post-38834074565241476082016-08-20T08:17:02.671-05:002016-08-20T08:17:02.671-05:00Nice idea! The first 2 times I say a student's name to correct a behavior, is a warning. The 3rd time, the student must go to the " think seat", fill out a think sheet form and think about their choices/ behavior. I discuss their sheet with them... Talk about better choices, then they rejoin the group. I also confer with the classroom teacher.... I've found that if the student is having problems in art class, they are usually having problems in every class... Which a lot of times there is an underlying reason for their undesirable behavior. I save the think sheets and if I collect 3 think sheets from the same student, I send them home to be signed by the parent. I have 2 different think sheets I use... One is for lower grades, it is a picture sheet and requires little writing. The second think sheet for upper grades, requires more written responses. In 2012 my husband and I moved back home where I taught art Pre-K - 4th grade. There was no art grade for PreK - 2nd. However, I wanted them to see what art grades were like. I never graded on ability, just meeting the criteria and following project directions. I used :( :/ and :) so they could understand. 3rd - 4th received 85, 90, 95, or 100's based on certain criteria. WOW! I'm amazed it took you that long to get a job. As always the most important thing is to establish your rules, goals, and procedures on the first day. Hope that helps. Not sure if you still check up on these, but I am starting k-5 next week (it's taken me 3.5 years to get an art job after graduating), and definitely feeling overwhelmed! I'm not sure how they do grades, or PDSA boards, or any of the expectations. I am really looking forward to the art aspect! I found out that ...Your practically wrote my story! I found out that they were just little kids in big kid bodies. The Foundation kids had barely had art since elementary school and they had gained the "I can't attitude". The Advanced class had lost their leader and I took the brunt of their anger. That was tough. I did find out that they weren't nearly as good as they thought they were. At first I was took lenient. Now it's "My way of the highway" and they have gotten over their prima donna attitudes. I want from a school where I repeated the same two lessons 12 times per week. Simple but BORING. I had panic attack because my principal was determined to make my life hell. Panic attacks were becoming all too often because he was freaking me out. Now I have a great support system with my new principal and I've learned to deal with parents and tricky teens. It's way better than I thought it would ever be. Treat them fair, firm and friendly! So happy you have found this too.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639181043390580427.post-67775899037276795302015-09-27T17:00:31.278-05:002015-09-27T17:00:31.278-05:00Tanya, thank you for your sweet comment. This has always been an ongoing struggle for me. Over the years the better my supply organization the smoother my class runs. I really don’t want to spend precious studio time helping a student find glaze over helping them with a fun new art technique. I have learned having great studio aids to keep the demands of a ceramic studio in order is a lifesaver. Your photo’s and tips you shared is a great tool for me. I love how you set up the bins with the drawers. I can see that not collecting trash like my classroom caddies do. I also showed my husband a pic of your 3D drying racks. He is going to adapt that design for ceramic dry racks. Quick question: Love the painted stools!! What kind of paint did you use? Thanks again for sharing and good luck in your new building. When the projects ...That's a fabulous question. When the projects are of a more opened approach I can usually remember whom they belong to because I remember working with them and discussing it along the way. Never the less, I have all students before they even begin a project, write their name and class code (such as 2-2) on the back, or in a discrete place on 3-D assignments. I will then take a picture of the name first then take a picture of the work. After the grading process, I can file both pictures. They will stay in the same order that they were taken. That's why I like to take a picture of the name first, then the work.
